Bruce Malasky

By Jade Bulecza

FHBA Area VII Vice President Bruce Malasky of Malasky Homes in West Palm Beach knows how to take the bull by the horns.

“Bruce is very good at quickly understanding issues and the challenges they present and he works hard to find solutions,” says Jon Rappaport of Ecclestone Signature Homes, member of the Gold Coast Builders Association (GCBA) and a past FHBA Builder Director. “He is a real friend to the industry and we are lucky to have him volunteer a lot of his time to us (the association).”

Malasky served as the GCBA’s President in 2004 and he took that role seriously because of his deeply-rooted belief that associations “carry the faith for builders.”

At FHBA, he serves on the Area Vice Presidents Council, Executive Committee, Governmental Affairs Committee, Industry Issues Committee, and Legal Action Committee.

“It’s good to know that what happens in our area occurs all over the state,” says Malasky, who has made many state contacts through FHBA. “Homeowners around the state have rights, but new homeowners have no rights. Together we can make our voices heard and solve these issues.”

Aside from his much-appreciated voluntary stints, he is the Vice President of Malasky Homes Inc., founded in 1991. He runs the company with his father Donald and brother Stephen.

Malasky Homes is currently building six homes ranging between $10 million and $18 million in price. The company is also building two small coastal communities in Indian River County.

Obtaining land in Palm Beach County is difficult because of the dominance of national companies but Malasky has carved his niche as a successful spec builder.

“Our homes are 99 percent finished before we start marketing a property for sale,” says Malasky. “We buy old houses on a great piece of real estate, demolish the old house and then design and build a new home as if it were our own.”

As an ultra high-end custom spec home builder, Malasky usually purchases dramatic, direct ocean-front or intercoastal land that can accommodate yachts. “Coming across the right parcel of land and being able to purchase it is key,” says Malasky. “My philosophy is location, location, location.”

He applies this business outlook on family life as well, taking his family to exotic places around the world.  Malasky, his wife Ellen, and sons Teddy and Hunter have visited Austria, Switzerland, Thailand, Spain, Hong Kong, Italy, London, and Paris.  Malasky is also an avid snow skier and frequents Park City, Utah numerous times throughout the year.

The Malaskys were in Phuket, Thailand on December 26, 2004 the day the tsunami hit.  “The people seemed very uneasy,” says Malasky. “I thought it was a waterline break and then I remember the beds shaking during that morning.” Turns out, they were 30 miles north of where the tsunami directly hit. His children and others were swimming in the hotel pool just before the large waves struck. They narrowly averted per disaster in an area and at a time when many lives were lost. The Malasky family was uninjured, able to fly out that night and finish the rest of their vacation.

That close call averted, Malasky returned to a life devoted to the loves of his life: his family and the building industry.
